Established in 1881 and incorporated in 1883, our community takes pride in its rich history and small-town values. Sutherland is perhaps best known for its annual three-day Labor Day Celebration, a beloved tradition since 1934 that brings together residents and visitors alike. With modern amenities, historic landmarks like the Covey Church, scenic spots such as Dog Creek Park, and a strong sense of community spirit, Sutherland offers the perfect blend of rural charm and hometown hospitality.

Fun Facts 

No. 1

In 1933, Bonnie and Clyde's gang was reportedly spotted near Sutherland. Local authorities conducted a search after a tip, but found no one.

No. 2

Sutherland has the oldest Library in the State of Iowa in a town of its size.

No. 3

The historic Opera House at 107 Main Street hosted vaudeville shows before becoming a movie theater, then a youth center, and is now Legacy's.

No. 4

Built in 1874, the historic Covey Church stands as O'Brien County's oldest frame church, located 7 miles north of Sutherland on M-12.
